Rod Mitchell joined John Scott & Partners, a pioneer of classic car insurance, from General Accident in 1977. Rod was responsible for the Commercial Insurance Division and, in 1989, he created the first policy specifically for the classic motor trade (dealers, restorers auction houses etc), a policy that also became the standard for major collectors.
It was hugely successful with unique features including the “subrogation waiver” which brought traders and collectors together, and it remains the basis for the majority of these policies to this day. Rod looked after all of the leading auction houses including Christies, Sothebys, Brooks and Coys and he attended their auctions in the UK, US and Europe.
In 1995 JS&P were acquired by Aon to complement their High Net Worth division and the classic car area grew with the addition of Bain Clarkson’s 50,000 classic book and then Footman James’ 100,000 classic book.
Rod was Aon’s ‘Global Product Champion’ for classic cars and he set up new operations in the US and throughout Europe. He also oversaw the addition of the Private Client division to the portfolio that included various units including Fine Art, Farms, Country Estates and Family Offices to make Aon by far and away the largest HNW broker in the UK.
Rod retired early in 2008 having been CEO and then Chairman of the combined divisions but was retained as a ”Friend of Aon “ for mentoring and advice. This required him to carry out appraisals on high value cars (mainly £1m plus) that were acceptable to the leading insurers.
In 2010, when Aon’s classic business was transferred to the Midlands, Rod decided to reunite the specialist team and return to the industry with a new business, Classic Insurance Services Ltd.
